Two weekends of the 2015 Suffolk County Swimming Championships ended with a Mother’s Day flourish for Newmarket Swimming Club. The championships held over the last two weekends in Ipswich have been very successful for the Newmarket team, especially for its young swimmers many of whom are competing at the Counties for the first time.
The overall medal tally in the individual age groups was 41 with 22 Golds, 7 Silvers and 12 Bronzes with a huge 118 new PB’s and 7 Regional times over the two weekends. Regional times were gained by Ignacio Larghero (50m Freestyle, 100 Backstroke and 50m Breaststroke), Henry Newell (50m Breaststoke and 200m Backstroke) and Thomas Allison (50m & 100m Butterfly).
Age group medals were won by Joseph Bavey (10 Gold), Maeve Pooley (8 Gold and 2 Bronze), Etholle Marks (3 Gold, 1 Silver & 1 Bronze), Jake Thomas-Mansfied (1 Silver & 3 Bronze), Tess Wesley (1 Gold, 2 Silver & 1 Bronze), Ella McCleary (2 Silvers), Henry Newell (1 Silver & 2 Bronze), Ignacio Larghero (1 Bronze), Thomas Allison (1 Bronze) and Zak Baldwin (1 Bronze).
To top this off, Jake Thomas-Mansfield reached five 12-14 year old finals winning Silver in 100m Butterfly, Bronze in 50m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke and 4th place in 50m Freestyle. Impressively Joseph Bavey reached two 9-11 year old finals at the age of just 9 and finished 5th in 50m Backstroke and 6th in 50m Breaststroke (he was the only 9yr old in the finals).
Everyone at the club looks forward to next weekend’s final 400m and relay events.
