NEWMARKET AND DISTRICT SWIM CLUB. VW TROPHY GALA SATURDAY 6TH DECEMBER 08
Newmarket and District swimming club hosted its final home gala at the old pool in the High Street before the move to the long-awaited new facilities in the Exning Road. They welcomed teams from Ely, St Neots, Saffron Walden and Halstead for an evening of exhilarating entertainment. The swimmers performed to a packed audience who, quite appropriately, all but lifted the roof! And even more appropriately the home team swam magnificently and took the trophy by a decisive margin. The final tallies were Newmarket 196, Halstead 121, St Neots 120, Ely 104 and Saffron Walden 98.aHA It was the last opportunity for personal best times to be recorded in the 25 yard pool and there were a hatful of them, 27 out of the 38 individual events. There was also an impressive number of wins by the Newmarket swimmers with 29 first places.
It was a sparkling team performance on a major day in the club’s 90 year history and the team manager fittingly felt unable to single out anyone for the ‘Swimmer of the Gala’. Instead, he praised the entire team for its outstanding effort and spirit.
So as the club bade farewell in the best possible way to the base that has served it well since 1938, there is great anticipation and excitement at the prospect of training and racing in impressive new surrounds.
