Newmarket Swimming Club started the New Year in great style, with swimmers representing the club at both the Cambridge and Ipswich Open meets.
Brothers Jake and Evan Thomas-Mansfield travelled the short distance to Cambridge for their Level 2 meet and came home with amazing results.
11 year old Jake swam in 7 events and achieved Regional qualifying times in 5 of them, 400 freestyle (time 5.01.25), 100 fly (1.15.12), 200 freestyle (2.23.46), 200 fly (2.45.72) and 100 freestyle (1.06.21). He also gained 1 new county qualifying time (100 breast in 1.35.61) - he now has all his county times - and a pb in the 200 backstroke (2.47.41) meaning that all 7 swims were personal bests. On top of this he came away with 1 gold and 4 Silver medals.
10 year old brother Evan swam in 2 events gaining superb regional times and pb’s in both the 400 freestyle (5.42.12) and 200 backstroke (3.04.62) – this also gives him the 100m regional time.
3 swimmers travelled to the Ipswich Open, Vicky and Stuart Root and Grace Evens. Girl’s senior captain Vicky won Bronze in the 200 freestyle. Brother Stuart gained pb’s in 4 events – 100m Freestyle (1.13.65 – entry time 1.16.44), 200m backstroke (2.52.19 entry time 2.57.98), 100m Breast (1.37.52 – entry time 1.41.59) and 50m Freestyle (34.41 – entry time 34.65).
Grace Evans won very impressive Silver Medals in 2 events – 400 IM (5.52.85 – entry time 6.10.44) and 200 IM (2.55.16)
Newmarket also entered 3 teams in the Swimathon event run by the Rotary Club and held at Newmarket Leisure Centre on Saturday. Jane Smith, Katie Bellwood, Kate Mcgrath, Sarah Nash, Beth and Holy Sampher, Sophie Bellwood, Alex Hatton and Eleanor Frost swam a very impressive 1160 lengths between them in 1 hour.
These fantastic results are a great start to 2012 and the club now looks forward to competing next week in the Sudbury last chance Open, the Sudbury Valentines masters meet and both the long and short course county championships in February and March and then hosting their own Open on the 21 and 22nd April.
